Houay Xai to Luang Prabang

I am a US passport holder and would like to travel from Houay Xai to Luang Prabang. What do you recommend is the best and most efficient way to make this travel? Any suggestion or advice would be greatly appreciated.

 Efficient way to travel Houay Xai (Bokeo) - Luang Prabang

Hi there,

Traveling from Bokeo to Luang Prabang or reverse, you have a few of options: Bus (VIP bus, Express bus, minivan), boat (slow boat or speed boat), there is no air travel between Bokeo and Luang Prabang.

Depending on your preference whether you focus on getting to the destination or you want to take the time to enjoy the natural scenery that the county has to offer.

If you'd like to get to the destination faster, bus is the most efficient way to travel, but still it takes many hours. The distance is around 500km, but the road winds through hills so it takes a long time.

By boat, you have two choices, slow boat or speed boat, if you take slow boat it take like two days (stay over night in a village on the Mekong River bank called Pak Beng). You have a lot of time to enjoy the view of the Mekong River or relax. Find info here.

For the speed boat, I think it's a bit dangerous, I don't want to recommend. It's fast though I think it's faster than taking the bus.
