Traveling to back to Mukdahan from Savannkhet.

Thanks for you website! Unfortunately, I read it too late and ended up paying for visas for my 3 kids who are 11 years and younger! They also wanted my mom who was over 65 to pay, but she called them on it.

My question is: we flew into Bangkok from the US. Stayed a couple of nights in Mukdahan then crossed the Friendship Bridge to Savannakhet. We are meeting other family here and now want to go back to visit more family in Mukdahan. Do we have to pay more to cross to Thailand and than back to Laos? We all have our passports and our visas. We had heard that for foreigners traveling across, we had to pay $80 per person. Please let us know! Thank you!

Crossing the bridge back to Mukdahan, you should not have to pay more

Dear Sy,

Thanks for posting the question.
Pity that you had to pay for the Lao visa for your children.

As for your question, as far as I know you don't have to pay more to cross the bridge back to Thailand. Base on my experience at the Friendship Bridge in Vientiane, passport holders don't have to pay to get immigration stamped on their passports when go out to Thailand. Border pass holders have to pay 12,500 per person (this is only for Lao border pass holders), this might have changed I'm not sure.

For your case that cross at different bridge, the cost might be a little different but $80 per person sounds ridiculous, it can't be right.

If the rules they enforce here in Vientiane also apply at the Bridge in Savannakhet, then you don't have to pay anything to cross to Mukdahan apart from your transportation fee.

I crossed from Mukdahan to Savannakhet once a few years ago, it seemed to cost more than crossing to Vientiane but the difference is acceptable (I don't remember how much different though).

If that's is still the case, it shouldn't cost that much ($80 is way too much).

Anyway, hope it gives you an idea.

D.
